Quick answer: The "Japan is unbelievably cheap right now" window has largely closed. The yen bottomed out against the rupee in mid-2024 and has recovered roughly 16 percent since, Japanese prices have risen, and 2026 brought a tripled departure tax and a Kyoto hotel tax that goes up to ten times its old level. Japan in 2026 is fair value, not a bargain. A realistic seven-day trip from India lands somewhere between ₹1.6 lakh and ₹2.6 lakh per person.
For about two years, every Indian traveller who went to Japan came back saying the same thing: it was cheaper than they expected. That was true, and it was mostly a currency accident.
The yen hit its low against the rupee in July 2024. Since then it has strengthened meaningfully, Japanese domestic inflation has done its work, and the government has added a layer of new tourist levies on top. The trip is still worth taking. It just costs what it should now.
Here is the arithmetic, honestly.
The Currency Story in One Table
Year | Approximate JPY to INR |
|---|---|
2023 average | ₹0.589 |
2024 average | ₹0.553 |
July 2024 low | ₹0.517 |
2025 average | ₹0.583 |
August 2026 | Around ₹0.60 |
If you priced a Japan trip in 2024 and shelved it, everything on that spreadsheet is now roughly 16 percent more expensive in rupee terms before a single price in Japan changed. And prices in Japan did change.
The Visa: No, It Has Not Gone Visa-Free
This one needs saying plainly, because the rumour keeps circulating.
Japan still requires a full visa for Indian passport holders. There is no visa waiver. What has changed is the process:
An eVISA has been open to Indian residents since April 2024 for tourism.
The visa fee moved to ₹500 for single or multiple entry from July 2026, plus the VFS service charge. The transit visa was abolished.
Processing typically runs five to ten working days, longer in peak season.
Walk-ins have ended. Appointments became mandatory at Chennai, Hyderabad, Kochi and Puducherry in March 2026, and at Mumbai shortly after.
One quirk that catches people at the airport: with the eVISA, the issuance notice has to be shown on a smartphone with a live internet connection. Screenshots and printouts have been rejected. Charge your phone and buy the airport wifi.
Flights
Delhi has non-stop service to Tokyo; Mumbai and Bengaluru do not, so everything from those cities routes through Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong or a Gulf hub.
Routing | Typical return economy, off-peak |
|---|---|
Delhi–Tokyo non-stop, Air India | ₹85,000–1,15,000 |
Delhi–Tokyo non-stop, ANA | ₹95,000–1,30,000 |
One-stop via Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong | ₹65,000–95,000 |
Cherry blossom season and autumn foliage add roughly 25 to 60 percent. The one-stop is not just cheaper — it also lets you break the journey, which matters more than it sounds on a route this long.
Daily Costs on the Ground
Item | Typical yen | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
Business hotel, per night | ¥8,000–15,000 | ₹4,800–9,000 |
Hostel dorm | ¥3,000–5,000 | ₹1,800–3,000 |
Ryokan with meals | ¥20,000+ | ₹12,000+ |
Convenience store meal | ¥500–700 | ₹300–420 |
Bowl of ramen | Around ¥800 | ₹480 |
Mid-range restaurant dinner | ¥1,500–3,000 | ₹900–1,800 |
Food, local transport and entry tickets combined run roughly ¥5,000–8,000 a day on a budget and ¥15,000–22,000 mid-range.
The convenience stores are not a compromise. Japanese conbini food is genuinely good, and eating two meals a day from a 7-Eleven or Lawson is a completely normal way for a budget traveller to do this trip.
The JR Pass Trap
This is the single biggest money mistake first-timers make.
After the 2023 price increase, the national Japan Rail Pass costs roughly ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 and ¥100,000 for 21 in ordinary class — with the overseas-purchase seven-day price rising again to around ¥53,000 from October 2026.
Now compare that to what most first trips actually involve. A Tokyo–Kyoto return on the Hikari shinkansen is about ¥27,940. Add Kyoto–Osaka, which is a local train costing a few hundred yen. A classic Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka itinerary comes in well under ¥50,000.
The national pass loses. It only wins if you are covering serious ground — Tokyo to Hiroshima to Kyushu, or a multi-region loop.
Better options for a normal trip:
Regional passes: Kansai Wide Area 5-day around ¥12,000, JR Tokyo Wide 3-day around ¥15,000, Hokuriku Arch 7-day around ¥30,000.
An IC card — Suica, PASMO or ICOCA — for every city train, subway, bus and vending machine. This is the one thing you should definitely get.
Individual shinkansen tickets, bought as you go.
The New Taxes
Three things landed in 2026 that were not there when your friends went.
Departure tax tripled to ¥3,000 from July 2026, up from ¥1,000. It is bundled into your ticket, so you will not see it separately.
Kyoto's lodging tax changed on 1 March 2026 from a three-tier to a five-tier system, per person per night: ¥200 under ¥6,000 a room, ¥400 up to ¥19,999, ¥1,000 up to ¥49,999, ¥4,000 up to ¥99,999, and ¥10,000 above ¥100,000. That top band is a tenfold increase, and it is now the highest lodging tax in Japan. Under-12s are exempt.
Tokyo currently charges ¥0, ¥100 or ¥200 per night by room rate, with a move to a percentage-based rate planned.
Separately, Mount Fuji now charges ¥4,000 per climber on all four trails during the July to September season, with the Yoshida trail capped at 4,000 climbers a day and trailheads closed between 14:00 and 03:00 except for hut guests.
Tax-Free Shopping Changes in November 2026
If shopping is part of the plan, note that Japan's tax-free system changes on 1 November 2026.
The old model — tax deducted at the till, consumables sealed in a bag you were not supposed to open — is being replaced by pay the tax at the shop, claim the refund at the airport. The ¥5,000 minimum purchase stays. The consumables cap and sealed-packaging rule go away.
The catch worth planning around: purchases must be within 90 days of departure, and at the airport every item on a receipt must be present or the whole receipt is voided. Do not post your shopping home ahead of yourself.
Vegetarian Japan: One Word Is the Problem
Dashi. Japanese soup stock is usually made from bonito flakes or dried sardines, and it is in miso soup, soba and udon broth, tempura dipping sauce, and a great many dishes described as vegetable dishes.
Saying "no meat" does not solve it. The question to ask is whether there is fish stock in it.
What reliably works:
Shojin ryori — Buddhist temple cuisine, strictly vegan, using kombu and shiitake for stock instead of fish. Kyoto is the best place for it.
Indian restaurants, which are plentiful in Tokyo and Osaka.
Vegan chains and menus labelled plant-based, which have grown fast in the last few years.
Conbini onigiri, fruit sandwiches and salads for the in-between meals.
What Seven Days Actually Costs
Per person, Delhi departure, mid-range, excluding shopping:
Line item | Cost |
|---|---|
Flights, one-stop off-peak | ₹75,000 |
Visa and VFS | ₹2,500 |
Accommodation, 6 nights business hotel | ₹42,000 |
Food and local transport | ₹35,000 |
Regional rail pass and shinkansen | ₹18,000 |
Entries, lodging tax, buffer | ₹12,000 |
Total | Around ₹1,85,000 |
Trim it to roughly ₹1.6 lakh with hostels and conbini food. Take it past ₹2.6 lakh with a non-stop flight, a ryokan night and cherry blossom dates.
Key Takeaways
The yen has recovered about 16 percent from its 2024 low against the rupee. The bargain window has mostly closed.
Japan has not gone visa-free for Indians. The eVISA is real; the waiver is a rumour. Appointments are now mandatory at most centres.
The national JR Pass usually loses on a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka trip. Buy a regional pass and an IC card instead.
New in 2026: ¥3,000 departure tax, Kyoto's five-tier lodging tax, ¥4,000 Mount Fuji climbing fee.
Tax-free shopping moves to airport refunds on 1 November 2026 — and every item must be with you at the counter.
Dashi is the vegetarian trap. Ask about fish stock, not meat.
When is Japan cheapest?
January, June, September and early December. Avoid late March to mid-April and late October through November unless the blossoms or the maples are the entire point — Kyoto hotel rates rise sharply in those weeks.
Is the eVISA faster than the paper visa?
Generally yes, but the difference is smaller than people expect and peak season stretches everything. Apply four to six weeks out.
Can I use my Indian credit card everywhere?
Card acceptance in Japan is much better than it was, but cash still matters at small restaurants, shrines and rural stations. Carry more cash than you would in Singapore, less than you would in Vietnam.
Is Japan good for a first international trip?
It is one of the easiest countries in the world to travel in — safe, punctual, exceptionally well-signposted. The barriers are cost and the visa, not the experience.
Prices and rules move. Exchange rates, airfares, the JR Pass schedule and the 2026 tax changes were checked against public sources in August 2026. Verify the tax-free rules and any visa change on official Japanese government sites before you travel — reports of visa liberalisation for Indians circulate frequently and were not confirmed at the time of writing.
