Quick answer: Visa-free does not mean condition-free. Most Southeast Asian countries also require a confirmed onward ticket, proof of funds, six months of passport validity and a digital arrival card. Airlines enforce these at check-in in India — before you ever reach the destination — because they pay the fine and the return airfare if you are refused entry.
The worst version of this story goes like this: you have a valid visa or a visa waiver, you arrive at Bengaluru airport at 4am, and a check-in agent asks to see your return ticket. You booked a one-way because you wanted flexibility. You are not getting on the plane.
Nobody is being difficult. Under ICAO rules and national carrier-sanction laws, the airline that carries an inadmissible passenger has to fly them home and pay a fine — commonly USD 1,000 to 2,500 per case, up to USD 10,000 in some countries, with large carriers facing annual caps in the millions. Check-in staff run your details through a system called Timatic and follow whatever it says.
So the rules are enforced in India, by a private company, with no appeal.
The Four Things Airlines Check
Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
Passport validity | Six months from your date of entry, near-universally |
Onward or return ticket | A confirmed booking leaving the country within your permitted stay |
Proof of funds | Cash, cards or statements — occasionally an actual published figure |
Arrival card | A free digital form, submitted before you fly |
Add a fifth for completeness: blank pages. Two is the practical minimum. It is rarely written in primary sources but it is checked often enough to matter.
Onward Ticket: Who Formally Requires One
Philippines — explicit. Visa-free entry for Indians requires a passport valid six months, a hotel booking, proof of funds and a return or onward ticket. The 14-day visa-free entry extends to 30 days if you hold a valid US, Japanese, Australian, Canadian, Schengen, Singaporean or UK visa or residence permit. Transit passengers are excluded from the visa-free privilege entirely.
Malaysia — a confirmed return ticket is a stated condition of the visa waiver.
Singapore — the Visa Free Transit Facility explicitly requires an onward ticket departing within 96 hours.
Thailand — routinely enforced by airlines at check-in.
Indonesia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka — enforced in practice; we did not find a clean primary-source citation, so treat them as required.
The honest summary: assume every country in the region wants one, because every airline will ask.
Proof of Funds: The Numbers That Are Actually Published
Most countries say "sufficient funds" and leave it there. Thailand is the exception and publishes figures.
Entry type into Thailand | Per person | Per family |
|---|---|---|
Visa exemption or transit | 10,000 THB | 20,000 THB |
Visa on arrival | 10,000 THB | 20,000 THB |
Tourist visa | 20,000 THB | 40,000 THB |
Non-immigrant visa | 20,000 THB | 40,000 THB |
Cash, foreign currency equivalent or documentary proof is accepted, and children under 12 are exempt. These amounts date back to rules from 1980 with figures set in 2000, and Thai authorities issued a reminder about them in July 2026 — which is generally a signal that enforcement is being tightened.
For the Philippines, proof of funds is required but no figure is published. For Indonesia, there is no official published figure either; reports of bank-statement checks at Denpasar circulate but we could not verify them.
Practical approach: carry a credit card with visible headroom, a debit card, some cash in the local currency, and a screenshot of a bank statement on your phone. That satisfies every version of this check without carrying a brick of cash.
Digital Arrival Cards: Free, Mandatory, and Widely Scammed
Every one of these is free on the official portal. Third-party sites charge up to USD 80 for the same form. Bookmark the official URL, not a search result.
Country | Card | Window | Official portal |
|---|---|---|---|
Thailand | TDAC | ~3 days before arrival | tdac.immigration.go.th |
Singapore | SG Arrival Card | Within 3 days incl. arrival day | ica.gov.sg |
Malaysia | MDAC | No more than 3 days before | imigresen-online.imi.gov.my |
Indonesia | All Indonesia Arrival Card | Within 72 hours of arrival | Official Indonesian immigration portal |
Philippines | eTravel | Within 72 hours before arrival | etravel.gov.ph |
Notes worth knowing:
Thailand's TDAC is not needed for pure airside transit, but is needed if you self-transfer and collect bags.
Singapore's SGAC is not needed if you transit without clearing immigration.
Indonesia's card merges the immigration arrival card, the customs declaration and the health declaration into one QR code. It became mandatory at Bali, Jakarta and Surabaya on 1 September 2025 and at all international airports from 1 October 2025. Submitting earlier than 72 hours gets rejected.
Sri Lanka has no separate arrival card — the free 30-day double-entry ETA introduced for Indians in May 2026 serves the purpose, but it must still be applied for in advance.
The Dummy Ticket Question
There is an industry selling "onward tickets" — real PNRs held for 24 to 48 hours, or reservations that were never paid for — for a small fee.
Here is the honest assessment. They often work at check-in. They also fail in ways that are worse than not having one:
Many are cancelled within 24 to 48 hours, so by the time immigration at the destination checks, the PNR is dead.
Airline staff can and do verify live PNR status.
Presenting an itinerary you know to be false to an immigration officer can be treated as deception — grounds for refusal, and in some countries a future entry ban.
Also note that almost every reassuring article about dummy tickets is published by a company selling them.
The safer versions cost slightly more and carry no risk:
Buy a genuine cheap regional one-way. A Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur or Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh hop is often ₹2,500 to ₹4,000. If your plans change, you have lost the price of a nice dinner.
Buy a fully refundable fare and cancel after entry. Costs more upfront, refunds fully.
Just book the return. For a fixed-date holiday, which most India-outbound trips are, this is a non-problem.
What Actually Gets People Refused
In IATA's framing, inadmissible passengers are under one percent of travellers, and roughly 80 percent of those cases are classed as "non-controllable" — the passenger did something the airline could not have prevented. The recurring causes, in rough order:
Passport under six months of remaining validity. Check this today, not the week before.
One-way ticket with no onward booking.
Arrival card not submitted, or submitted on a scam site that never filed it.
A visa that does not match the purpose — a transit visa used to enter, a tourist entry when the questioning suggests work.
No accommodation booking where one is a stated condition, as in the Philippines.
None of these are judgement calls. All five are fixed in an afternoon before you fly.
Key Takeaways
Airlines enforce entry conditions in India, because they pay the penalty. Arguing at check-in does not work.
Assume a confirmed onward ticket is required everywhere in Southeast Asia.
Thailand publishes real funds figures — 10,000 THB per person on visa exemption, 20,000 THB on a tourist visa.
Every digital arrival card is free on the official portal. Do not pay a third party.
Six months of passport validity from date of entry, and two blank pages, is the universal baseline.
Dummy tickets sometimes work and occasionally cost you the trip. A ₹3,000 real one-way is better insurance.
Does a hotel booking count as proof of onward travel?
No. They are two separate checks. A hotel booking proves accommodation; an onward ticket proves you will leave.
Can I show a bus or train ticket instead of a flight?
For land-border departures, generally yes — a Bangkok to Vientiane bus or a KL to Singapore coach booking is usually accepted. Airline check-in staff are more comfortable with flights, so carry both if you are cutting it fine.
I hold an OCI card. Do these rules apply?
An OCI card affects your entry to India, not to third countries. On an Indian passport in Southeast Asia, every rule above applies unchanged.
How early should I check my passport validity?
Now. Indian passport renewal typically takes a few weeks through Passport Seva, but appointment availability at busy PSKs can stretch that. Six months of validity on your date of entry, not your date of booking.
Last verified against public sources in August 2026. Entry conditions, arrival-card requirements and funds thresholds change with little notice. Confirm with the destination's embassy or your airline before travel. Our visa-free and visa-on-arrival guide for Indians covers the entry side in more detail.
