San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina: travel guide
The base for the Quebrada de Humahuaca and its coloured mountains
Gateway to Argentina's Andean northwest — Quebrada de Humahuaca UNESCO site, colorful Purmamarca hill, and indigenous Andean culture.
About San Salvador de Jujuy
San Salvador de Jujuy is the provincial capital and the main entry point to Argentina's far northwest. The city itself is modest, with a plaza, a cathedral and a regional market feel, but its value is in what lies north and west of it.
The Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO-listed valley, runs through villages and mountains of many colours. Purmamarca, with the Cerro de los Siete Colores rising behind its adobe houses, is the most photographed stop, and the route continues to Tilcara and Humahuaca. Andean food, weaving and music remain part of everyday life here.
It suits road trippers and culture seekers. The dry months from April to November are the most reliable for travel.
