Puerto Madryn, Argentina: travel guide
Whales, penguins and sea lions on the Patagonian Atlantic coast
Patagonia's whale-watching capital — southern right whales in Golfo Nuevo, Valdés Peninsula penguins, sea lions, and orcas.
About Puerto Madryn
Puerto Madryn is a small coastal city on the Golfo Nuevo in Chubut, and the main gateway to the marine wildlife of the Valdés Peninsula. Southern right whales come into the sheltered gulf each year to breed, and from the shore or a boat they are one of the great sights of the Argentine coast.
The Valdés Peninsula Wildlife Reserve, a day trip away, adds sea lions, elephant seals, Magellanic penguins and, in some places, orcas. Back in the city, there is a long beach promenade, a relaxed seafront and plenty of seafood restaurants.
It suits wildlife lovers and families. Whale season is generally from roughly June to December, while penguins are best seen in the warmer months.
