Sevan, Armenia: travel guide

Lake Sevan's northwest shore, with a hilltop monastery and summer beaches

Armenia's lakeside resort at 1,925 m on the northwest shore of Lake Sevan, inside Sevan National Park — the 9th-century Sevanavank monastery crowns the peninsula 3 km east of town.

About Sevan

Sevan is the main town on the northwest shore of Lake Sevan, a vast high-altitude lake that is the centrepiece of Armenia's landscape. At nearly 2,000 metres, the air is cool and the water a deep blue.

The best-known sight is Sevanavank, a ninth-century monastery on the peninsula just east of the centre, reached by a stairway with wide views over the water. Beaches along the peninsula fill with Armenian families in summer, and the shoreline is a place for walks and fresh lake fish. Across the lake, the khachkar field at Noratus is a popular stop.

Sevan suits easy day trips from Yerevan and summer lakeside breaks. The warm months from June to September are the usual time to go.
