Bansko, Bulgaria: travel guide

Pirin mountain resort with a gondola, ski slopes and a stone-built old town

Bulgaria's premier ski and mountain resort at the foot of the Pirin range, blending a modern gondola-served ski area with a cobbled Revival old town of stone mehana taverns and Pirin National Park hiking.

About Bansko

Bansko lies at the foot of the Pirin range in south-west Bulgaria and is the country's main ski resort. A gondola lifts skiers from the edge of town into the mountains, and the ski area is the main reason for winter visits.

Away from the lifts, the old town keeps cobbled lanes, stone houses and traditional mehana taverns serving grilled meats and local dishes. Vazrazhdane Square, the Holy Trinity Church with its clock tower and house-museums such as Neofit Rilski and Velyanova House are the cultural sights. In summer the trails of Pirin National Park open for hiking.

Bansko suits skiers and hikers. Winter is for snow, summer for mountain walks.
