Iquique, Chile: travel guide

Pacific beach city beneath desert cliffs, with paragliding above

A Pacific port city squeezed between the Atacama Desert cliffs and the sea. Its Victorian-era nitrate-boom heritage, long beach strip, duty-free shopping zone, and world-class paragliding from the 800 m coastal cliffs make it Chile's northern beach capital.

About Iquique

Iquique is a port city in northern Chile squeezed between the Pacific and a towering wall of desert hills. The narrow coastal strip holds a long beach front, a tidy historic centre and a duty-free zone known as ZOFRI, giving the city a busy, sun-drenched feel.

Playa Cavancha is the main city beach, and the old wooden buildings around Plaza Prat recall the nitrate boom of the nineteenth century. Humberstone, an abandoned saltpetre works inland, tells that story in rusted machinery and empty streets. The cliffs above the city are popular for paragliding, with launches from Cerro Dragon.

Iquique suits beach holidays, adventure-sport fans and history-minded travellers. The climate is dry and mild for much of the year, and summer brings the biggest crowds to the sand.
