Temuco, Chile: travel guide

Mapuche heartland city and gateway to volcanoes and araucaria forest

The capital of La Araucanía and the heart of Mapuche indigenous culture. Its covered municipal market is one of Chile's finest for crafts and produce, and it serves as the gateway to Villarrica volcano, Lago Villarrica, and Conguillío National Park.

About Temuco

Temuco is a regional city in the Araucania, long regarded as the centre of Mapuche culture in Chile. It is a working, commercial place more than a sightseeing one, but its markets and museums offer an honest introduction to the region's traditions and produce.

The Mercado Municipal is the place to see local crafts and regional food, and the Museo Regional de la Araucania adds historical background. Cerro Nielol is a green hill park close to the centre. Most visitors use Temuco as a gateway to the lakes and volcanoes further east, including Conguillio National Park, known for its araucaria forests and volcano scenery.

Temuco suits travellers heading into the Lake District and those interested in indigenous heritage. The summer months are the most dependable for outdoor trips.
