Guilin, China: travel guide

Limestone peaks, the Li River and bamboo rafts around Yangshuo

Set among the surreal karst peaks of the Li River, Guilin and neighbouring Yangshuo offer China's most iconic river-and-mountain scenery, immortalised on the 20-yuan note.

About Guilin

Guilin is the gateway to one of China's most recognisable landscapes: steep green limestone peaks rising from rice fields and winding rivers. The scenery stretches south to Yangshuo, and the area is as much about the countryside as the city itself.

Things to do in Guilin include a Li River boat trip, a bamboo raft on the Yulong River, cycling quiet lanes, exploring Reed Flute Cave and climbing Elephant Trunk Hill. Yangshuo's West Street offers cafes and evening bustle, while Xingping Ancient Town is a calmer base with fine river views.

It suits photographers, cyclists and easy-going walkers. The best time to visit Guilin is spring and autumn, when mist and mild temperatures flatter the peaks.
