Kutná Hora, Czechia: travel guide
Medieval silver town with a Gothic cathedral and the famous bone church
Medieval silver town, UNESCO-listed since 1995 for the Gothic Church of St Barbara — and for the Sedlec Ossuary on its edge, a chapel decorated with the bones of more than 40,000 dead.
About Kutná Hora
Kutná Hora grew rich on silver mining in the Middle Ages, and the wealth is still visible in its Gothic churches and tidy town centre. It lies within easy reach of Prague, and ranks among the most rewarding day trips from the capital.
The soaring Cathedral of Saint Barbara, with its spiky roofline, is the main sight and forms part of the town's UNESCO listing. The Sedlec Ossuary, on the edge of town, is a chapel decorated with the bones of tens of thousands of people, and it is as striking as it sounds. You can also visit the Italian Court, once the royal mint, and the Czech Silver Museum.
Kutná Hora suits history lovers and day-trippers. Spring and autumn are comfortable seasons to go.
