Porvoo, Finland: travel guide
Red riverside warehouses and cobbled lanes in a medieval Finnish town
Finland's second-oldest city is a living postcard: Old Porvoo (Vanha Porvoo) clusters around its hilltop medieval cathedral with rows of iconic ochre-red wooden warehouses lining the river banks — a scene virtually un…
About Porvoo
Porvoo is a small town on the Porvoonjoki river about fifty kilometres east of Helsinki, and its old quarter is one of the most photographed corners of Finland. Wooden houses in soft colours and rows of red-ochre warehouses line the riverbank beneath the medieval cathedral on the hill.
It is a place for pottering: browse craft shops, chocolatiers and small galleries along cobbled lanes, walk the river path and sit with a coffee by the water. At Christmas the old town hosts a seasonal market. Porvoo is an easy day trip from the capital.
Porvoo suits couples and day-trippers who like small-town character. Summer and the weeks before Christmas are the most atmospheric times to visit.
