Matsumoto, Japan: travel guide
A black castle below the Northern Alps, with old streets and mountain access
Nestled in the Japanese Alps at 580 m elevation, Matsumoto is crowned by Japan's oldest original castle—a stunning black fortress nicknamed the "Crow Castle." The city is the gateway to the Northern Alps and Kamikochi highland valley.
About Matsumoto
Matsumoto is a small city in the Japanese Alps, dominated by a dark, original wooden castle that stands in a moat against a mountain backdrop. It is one of the few castles in Japan that survives in its historic form, and that alone makes the trip worthwhile.
The town is easy to explore on foot, with old merchant streets such as Nakamachi, the riverside Nawate Street with small shops and cafes, and a museum of contemporary art. Matsumoto is also a gateway to the Northern Alps and the Kamikochi valley, popular with hikers in summer and early autumn.
It suits walkers, castle fans and travellers heading toward the mountains. Spring, summer and autumn are all good times to visit.
