Dead Sea / Sweimeh, Jordan: travel guide
Floating in salty water on the lowest shore on Earth, with resort spas
The lowest point on Earth (about 430m below sea level), where hyper-saline water lets you float effortlessly and mineral mud draws spa-goers. Resorts cluster along the Sweimeh strip on the north-east shore.
About Dead Sea / Sweimeh
The Dead Sea shore at Sweimeh is a stretch of resorts on the eastern side of the sea, far below sea level, with the hills of the West Bank visible across the water. It is a resort area rather than a town, and a short drive from Amman.
The main experience is floating in the salty water, which holds you up without effort, and covering yourself in mineral mud before rinsing off. Hotels have spas, pools and private beaches, and public beaches provide day access. On the way you can stop at viewpoints along the road or visit nearby Bethany Beyond the Jordan, a baptism site.
It suits couples and those who want a restful break. Winter and spring are the most pleasant seasons, and summer is very hot.
