Oskemen, Kazakhstan: travel guide

A river city in the east, and the gateway to the Altai mountains

Known in Russian as Ust-Kamenogorsk, Oskemen sits at the confluence of the Irtysh and Ulba rivers — the gateway to spectacular East Kazakhstan and the Altai Mountains.

About Oskemen

Oskemen, known in Russian as Ust-Kamenogorsk, is an industrial city in eastern Kazakhstan on the Irtysh River. For most travellers it is a practical stop and a gateway to the Altai region, where forests, lakes and mountain valleys stretch toward the Russian and Chinese borders.

In town you can visit the regional museum, walk the river embankment and ride the cable car. The countryside is the main attraction: the Bukhtarma Reservoir offers lake scenery and boat trips, and the Katon-Karagay National Park has mountain and forest hiking.

Oskemen suits outdoor travellers and those seeking uncrowded landscapes. Summer is the main season for hiking and lakes, and autumn colours are attractive.
