Savannakhet, Laos: travel guide

Quiet Mekong town of French shophouses, markets and dinosaur fossils

Southern Laos Gateway — a quiet riverside town known for history, markets, and access to 4000 Islands and Mekong adventures.

About Savannakhet

Savannakhet is a quiet Mekong town in central Laos, with French-era shophouses, wide streets and a sleepy riverfront across from Thailand. It sees far fewer visitors than the northern towns, which suits those after a slower pace.

The old colonial quarter is easy to explore on foot, and Wat Sainyaphum and the That Ing Hang stupa, a short ride away, are the main temple stops. The Dinosaur Museum surprises many visitors, and Dong Natad Protected Forest offers a walk in the countryside.

Savannakhet suits travellers heading overland through the south and those who prefer small, local places. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
