Dharavandhoo, Maldives: travel guide
Baa Atoll's gateway to Hanifaru Bay and its manta and whale shark gatherings
A charming local island in Baa Atoll and the gateway to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Home to Hanifaru Bay — the world's single largest known aggregation of manta rays and whale sharks — with superb diving, snorkelling, and warm island hospitality.
About Dharavandhoo
Dharavandhoo is a small local island in Baa Atoll, and the practical base for visiting Hanifaru Bay, one of the most talked-about marine sites in the Maldives. The atoll is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and snorkelling here is built around marine conservation rules.
Boat trips head to Hanifaru, where manta rays and whale sharks gather to feed in season. Closer to home, the island has its own house reef, a public beach, an eco centre and the Vaadhoo sandbank for a picnic stop. Guesthouses keep things relaxed and friendly.
It suits snorkellers, divers and wildlife-minded travellers more than nightlife seekers. Manta season is usually described as running roughly from May to November, so check current conditions before planning around it.
