Morelia, Mexico: travel guide

Pink-stone colonial capital of Michoacán, with a grand cathedral

The pink-stone capital of Michoacán, a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city famed for its majestic cathedral, candied fruit, butterfly sanctuaries, and traditional crafts.

About Morelia

Morelia is the capital of Michoacán, a dignified colonial city built in a warm pink stone. Its historic centre has a grand cathedral, arcaded plazas and a long aqueduct, and it carries a quiet, scholarly atmosphere because of its universities and music traditions.

Walk from the cathedral to the Palacio de Gobierno, with its murals, then stroll the Callejón del Romance and the Fuente Las Tarascas. The Casa Natal de Morelos tells the story of one of the leaders of Mexican independence, and sweet shops sell the city's candied fruit and fruit sweets. Outside the city, the region is known for its crafts, lakes and, between late autumn and early spring, the overwintering monarch butterflies.

Morelia suits culture lovers and travellers who like quieter colonial cities. The mild climate means the dry months from November to April are the best time to visit.
