San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico: travel guide

Cool highland colonial town of Tzotzil markets, textiles and cafés

A cool highland colonial city in Chiapas, known for its indigenous Tzotzil markets, colorful textiles, nearby Sumidero Canyon, and bohemian café scene.

About San Cristóbal de las Casas

San Cristóbal de las Casas is a colonial town in the highlands of Chiapas, a cool, cobbled place surrounded by pine-covered hills. The air is thin and fresh, and the atmosphere is part Spanish, part Maya, and part café-and-bookshop student town.

Walk the historic centre to see the cathedral, the Templo de Santo Domingo with its craft market, and the viewpoint at the Templo de Guadalupe. The Na Bolom museum is a good introduction to the region's peoples, and nearby villages such as San Juan Chamula are home to the Tzotzil Maya and their distinctive church. Beyond the town lies the Sumidero Canyon, a deep gorge usually visited by boat from Chiapa de Corzo.

San Cristóbal suits culture-minded travellers and slow walkers. Evenings are cold, and the drier months from November to April are the most reliable.
