Valladolid, Mexico: travel guide

Small colonial Yucatán city with town-centre cenotes and ruins nearby

A charming small colonial city in the Yucatán heartland, ideal base for Chichen Itza and Ek Balam, with cenotes in the town center and an authentic Mexican atmosphere.

About Valladolid

Valladolid is a small colonial city in the middle of the Yucatán Peninsula, a quieter alternative to the coast with pastel facades, shady squares and a slow rhythm. It sits roughly halfway between Mérida and Cancún, and makes a good base for the region's best sites.

Start at the main plaza, then walk the Calzada de los Frailes to the old convent. Cenote Zací is right in town, and Cenote Suytun is a short drive away. Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam are both within easy reach, with Ek Balam known for a pyramid that you can still climb in places.

Valladolid suits travellers who want culture and a calm base rather than a resort. It is hot for much of the year, and the drier months from November to April are the most pleasant.
