Chefchaouen, Morocco: travel guide

Blue-washed alleys on a mountain slope in the Rif

The Blue Pearl of the Rif Mountains — a photogenic hillside medina washed in shades of blue, a relaxed base for mountain walks.

About Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is a small mountain town in the Rif, well known for the blue paint that covers many of its houses and walls. It has a relaxed atmosphere, and the cooler air of the hills is a relief from the plains.

Most visits are spent wandering the medina lanes, stopping for mint tea in the main square beside the old kasbah, and shopping for woven blankets and local goat cheese. For a wider view, you can walk up to the Spanish Mosque on the hill above town at sunset. The Talassemtane region nearby offers hiking and waterfalls.

Chefchaouen suits slow travellers, photographers and walkers. Spring and early autumn are the best time to visit, when the days are warm and clear. Winter can be wet and cold.
