Sauraha (Chitwan), Nepal: travel guide

The jungle gateway to Chitwan's rhinos, tigers and Terai grasslands

The gateway village to Chitwan National Park, Nepal's first national park and a UNESCO site famed for one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tigers, wild elephants and jungle safaris on the Terai plains.

About Sauraha (Chitwan)

Sauraha is the small riverside village at the edge of Chitwan National Park, and it exists to get you into the Terai wilderness. The climate shifts from Himalayan cool to warm, humid lowland, and the pace slows accordingly.

Visits are built around the park: jeep or boat safaris, guided walks, birdwatching and the chance of seeing one-horned rhinoceros, deer and, with luck, a tiger. Tharu villages nearby, a cultural museum and the gharial breeding centre round out a stay. Evenings are spent at lodges beside the river.

It suits wildlife lovers and families, and works well after the trekking region. Cooler months from October to March are comfortable, while the monsoon brings heat, rain and tall grass.
