Ålesund, Norway: travel guide
An Art Nouveau town rebuilt after a fire, on islands at the fjord mouth
An Art Nouveau town rebuilt in stone after a 1904 fire, spread across islands at the mouth of the Geirangerfjord region — climb the 418 Aksla steps for the classic panorama.
About Ålesund
Ålesund is a coastal town on a group of islands at the mouth of the fjords of western Norway. After a fire in 1904 it was rebuilt in stone in the Art Nouveau style, and the result is a harbour lined with turrets, spires and decorative facades.
Things to do in Ålesund include climbing the 418 steps to the Aksla viewpoint for the classic panorama, visiting the Atlantic Sea Park and taking a boat out among the islands. The town is also a handy base for the Geirangerfjord, the Trollstigen road and bird islands such as Runde.
Ålesund suits photographers and fjord-seekers. Summer is the best period, with long daylight and the most open attractions.
