Bidiyah, Oman: travel guide
Gateway to the Sharqiya Sands and its sweeping amber dunes
Gateway town to the Sharqiya (Wahiba) Sands, a vast sea of amber dunes where Bedouin desert camps offer dune drives, camel rides and some of Oman's darkest starry skies, near the palm-lined pools of Wadi Bani Khalid.
About Bidiyah
Bidiyah is a small town on the edge of the Sharqiya Sands, also called the Wahiba Sands, a large dune desert in eastern Oman. It is a launch point for desert stays rather than a destination in itself.
From here you can head into the dunes for camel rides, dune drives with an experienced guide, and a night in a Bedouin-style camp, with clear skies for stargazing. The region's nomadic Bedouin culture is part of the experience, and some camps offer meals and cultural encounters. Nearby, the palm-lined pools of Wadi Bani Khalid make a cooling stop.
Bidiyah suits adventurous travellers, couples and families. The cooler months from October to April are the best time to visit, as summer daytime temperatures are very high.
