Areguá, Paraguay: travel guide
Lakeside artisan town of ceramics, strawberries and cobbled streets
Historic artisan town on Lake Ypacaraí (~30 km from Asunción), famed for ceramics, strawberry farms, cobblestone streets and colonial architecture — a UNESCO Creative City for crafts (2019).
About Areguá
Areguá is a small town on the shore of Lake Ypacaraí, about 30 kilometres from Asunción, and it is known for its pottery, its strawberries and its quiet colonial streets. The town sits on a hillside above the water, and the pace here is slow.
Around the centre you can browse craft workshops and galleries, including the Calle de los Artesanos, and visit the Centro Cultural del Lago. The Iglesia de la Candelaria is a modest colonial church, and the lakefront promenade is a pleasant place for a meal. The hill of Cerro Koi rises behind the town for views over the water, and in the strawberry season local stalls sell the fruit and its preserves.
Areguá suits day trippers from the capital and those who enjoy crafts. It is warm and humid in summer, and the cooler months from May to September are the more comfortable for walking.
