El Nido, Philippines: travel guide
Limestone cliffs, lagoons and island-hopping on Palawan's Bacuit Bay
Gateway to the Bacuit Archipelago — a northern Palawan town famed for towering limestone karst cliffs, hidden lagoons, secluded white-sand beaches, and world-class island-hopping by bangka boat.
About El Nido
El Nido is a small town on the northern tip of Palawan, set on Bacuit Bay and backed by dramatic limestone cliffs. It is the main base for exploring the Bacuit Archipelago, a scatter of islands, lagoons and quiet beaches.
Most days here are spent on a bangka, the traditional outrigger boat, visiting places such as the Big and Small Lagoons, Secret Lagoon and the Seven Commando Beach. Snorkelling in clear water and kayaking beneath the rock walls are the main activities, while Nacpan Beach on the coast to the north offers a long stretch of sand. In town, small restaurants serve fresh seafood.
El Nido suits couples, divers and active travellers. The dry months from November to May bring the calmest seas.

Safety and scams to avoid
Island-hopping tour quotes that omit mandatory fees
Booking booths and piers, El Nido town
Tour A is often quoted at a base price, with the municipal eco-tourism fee, lagoon entry and kayak rental charged separately. Some booths do not itemise these, so the final cost at the pier is noticeably higher than the quote. The fees themselves are official; the problem is that they are not disclosed up front.
How to avoid it: Ask for a written breakdown of what is and is not included before paying, and keep the eco-tourism fee receipt. Compare the all-in total across operators.
