Abha, Saudi Arabia: travel guide
Misty Sarawat mountain city with cable cars and stone villages
The highland capital of Saudi Arabia's Asir region — a green, mist-shrouded mountain city at 2,200 m in the Sarawat Mountains near the Yemen border.
About Abha
Abha is the highland capital of the Asir region in southwest Saudi Arabia, set in the Sarawat Mountains at more than two thousand metres. Its cooler, greener, often misty scenery looks quite unlike the desert most people expect of the kingdom.
A cable car on Green Mountain gives views over the city, while the Al Soudah mountains and peaks rise to some of the highest ground in the country. At Rijal Alma, tall stone-and-slate houses form a heritage village, Al-Muftaha Arts Village has galleries and craft studios, and the lake at Abha Dam is a pleasant place for an evening stroll. Asir National Park protects the surrounding highlands.
Abha suits families, hikers and anyone chasing cool air. Summer is the most popular season for its mild weather and mist, and the hills stay noticeably cooler than the lowlands year-round.
