George, South Africa: travel guide
Garden Route hub at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains
Capital of the Garden Route and gateway to the Outeniqua Mountains, George is a lush city famous for world-class golf, Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe railway heritage, and proximity to Wilderness National Park.
About George
George is the main town of the Garden Route in the Western Cape, set beneath the Outeniqua Mountains and with its own airport, which makes it a convenient gateway for the region. It is a green, leafy town more than a seaside resort, but the coast is close.
Golf is the great draw, with Fancourt Golf Estate among the best-known courses. The Outeniqua Transport Museum recalls the steam trains that once ran the coast, the Outeniqua Pass has viewpoints over the mountains, and Victoria Bay is a small surf beach. Wilderness National Park, with its lagoons and forest, is a short drive away.
George suits golfers and road-trippers exploring the Garden Route. The climate is mild year-round, and December to March is the warmest and busiest period.
