Toledo, Spain: travel guide

A walled hilltop city of three cultures above the Tagus

Hilltop "City of Three Cultures" above the Tagus, a walled UNESCO ensemble of cathedral, synagogues and mosques.

About Toledo

Toledo stands on a granite hill above a bend in the Tagus, a walled city whose skyline looks much as it did centuries ago. Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities all left their mark, which is why it is called the city of three cultures.

Wander the lanes to the cathedral, the Alcázar and Plaza de Zocodover, and cross the Puente de Alcántara or Puente de San Martín. The Mirador del Valle across the river gives the postcard view of the whole city. Marzipan and ironwork are local specialities.

Toledo suits history lovers and makes an easy day trip from Madrid, though staying overnight gives the evening quiet. Spring and autumn are the best time to visit Toledo.
