Taitung, Taiwan: travel guide
Slow-paced east coast of rice paddies, hot springs and island ferries
Taiwan's most laid-back city, Taitung anchors the rugged East Rift Valley where hot springs, rice paddies, and indigenous Amis, Puyuma, and Rukai villages create a pastoral world apart from western Taiwan's urban dens…
About Taitung
Taitung is a relaxed city on Taiwan's south-eastern coast, with a rural feel and a strong indigenous heritage. It is a place to slow down, with rice fields, hot springs and open skies beyond the town.
The East Rift Valley is home to Amis, Puyuma and Rukai communities, and the Pacific shoreline suits cycling and quiet stops. Boats and flights link Taitung with Green Island and Orchid Island, the latter home to the Tao people and known for its flying fish tradition.
Taitung suits cyclists, culture seekers and travellers who like calm landscapes. The best time to visit Taitung is spring and autumn, with typhoon risk in summer.
