Chiang Rai, Thailand: travel guide

Quiet northern city of striking temples, tea hills and the Golden Triangle

Gateway to the Golden Triangle — a charming northern city of temples, night markets, hill tribe culture, and scenic mountain vistas.

About Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai is a smaller, calmer city in the far north of Thailand, close to the borders with Myanmar and Laos. It is known for its modern temples, which are unlike anything else in the country, and for the rolling hills and tea plantations around it.

The white temple of Wat Rong Khun and the blue temple of Wat Rong Suea Ten draw visitors for their intricate artistry, while the night bazaar offers northern snacks and handicrafts. Day trips lead to the Golden Triangle, where the Mekong meets the borders of three countries, and to hill villages and tea terraces.

Chiang Rai suits travellers who want a slower northern stop. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
