Kanchanaburi, Thailand: travel guide

River Kwai town of wartime history, waterfalls and forest national parks

River valley town famed for the Bridge over the River Kwai, WWII museums, elephant camps, and natural hot springs.

About Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is a river town in western Thailand, about two hours from Bangkok, and it is known above all for its Second World War history. The Bridge over the River Kwai crosses the river on the edge of the town, and the surrounding landscape is one of green hills, limestone caves and national parks.

The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and the Allied war cemetery explain the story of the railway built by prisoners of war. A scenic train ride along the Death Railway hugs a cliff above the river, and Erawan National Park, a short drive away, has a multi-tiered waterfall with pools for swimming.

Kanchanaburi suits history lovers and nature fans. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
