Khon Kaen, Thailand: travel guide

Isan's university city of silk villages, sticky rice and lake-side views

Isan regional city known for sticky rice, silk production, and local cultural attractions.

About Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is one of the main cities of Isan, in the north-east of Thailand, and a lively university and commercial hub. It offers a good introduction to the region's food and crafts without the crowds of the better-known tourist cities.

Things to do in Khon Kaen include watching silk being woven in nearby villages such as Chonnabot, visiting the lakeside temple of Wat Nong Wang and its tall nine-storey pagoda, and trying Isan dishes such as som tam, grilled chicken and sticky rice. The Phu Wiang area has dinosaur fossils and museums.

Khon Kaen suits travellers who like food and crafts and want a base in the north-east. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
