Nong Khai, Thailand: travel guide

Mekong riverside town on the Laos border, with a sculpture park and silk

Thailand's Gateway to Laos — a border town on the Mekong known for temples, silk weaving, and friendly local atmosphere.

About Nong Khai

Nong Khai is a quiet town on the banks of the Mekong in north-eastern Thailand, facing Laos across the river. It has an easy, slow rhythm, with riverside promenades, old shophouses and a laid-back cafe scene.

The most unusual sight is Sala Kaew Ku, a sculpture park of huge concrete figures from Buddhist and Hindu tales. Along the waterfront, a night market sells local snacks, and the Tha Sadet market is popular for fresh produce and handicrafts. The Friendship Bridge leads to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, which is a short ride away.

Nong Khai suits travellers heading to Laos and anyone who enjoys quiet river towns. The cooler months from November to February are the most comfortable.
