Surin, Thailand: travel guide

Isan town known for its elephants and a Khmer temple landscape nearby

Elephant enthusiasts' hub — northeastern Thailand known for elephant camps and cultural festivals.

About Surin

Surin is a provincial town in the lower north-east of Thailand, near the border with Cambodia. It is best known for its long link with elephants, and the local Kuy people have traditionally worked with them as mahouts.

The Elephant Study Centre at Ban Ta Klang lets visitors learn about the animals and their keepers, and the elephant round-up in November is the province's best-known event. Nearby, old Khmer sanctuaries such as Prasat Sikhoraphum and Prasat Ta Muen show the region's ancient past, and local silk weaving is also known.

Surin suits travellers interested in culture and Isan life, away from the main tourist routes. The cooler months from November to February are the most pleasant.
