Djerba, Tunisia: travel guide
Sunny Mediterranean island of potters, souks and an ancient synagogue
A sun-drenched island off Tunisia's southeast coast whose capital Houmt Souk mixes Arab, Berber and Jewish heritage — the ancient El Ghriba synagogue, an Ottoman fort, potters' villages and Star Wars film sites.
About Djerba
Djerba is an island off Tunisia's southeast coast, joined to the mainland by a causeway, with a flat, palm-dotted landscape and long beaches. The island's main town, Houmt Souk, has a lively market and a waterfront with an Ottoman fort, Borj Ghazi Mustapha.
El Ghriba synagogue is one of North Africa's best-known Jewish pilgrimage sites, and Guellala is the island's pottery village, with a museum devoted to island life. In Erriadh, the Djerbahood project covers whitewashed village walls with street art, and a few spots on the island, including around Ajim, were used for Star Wars scenes.
Djerba suits beach holidays and easy exploring by car or bike. The island is warm for much of the year, with spring and autumn the most comfortable seasons and midsummer the hottest.
