Bucaramanga, Colombia: travel guide

City of parks and the base for Chicamocha Canyon

"City of Parks" in the Eastern Andes. Gateway to San Gil — adventure-sport capital — and Chicamocha Canyon, one of the world's deepest.

About Bucaramanga

Bucaramanga is a city in Colombia's Santander region, set on a ridge in the Eastern Andes and known for its many parks and green spaces. It is a working regional capital more than a tourist centre, but it has a pleasant climate and makes a practical base for exploring the area.

The real attraction lies outside town. The Chicamocha Canyon, a vast gorge, can be admired from viewpoints and by cable car. Barichara, a beautifully kept colonial village of stone streets, is a short drive away, and San Gil is a centre for adventure sports such as rafting and caving.

Bucaramanga suits road-trippers, adventure travellers and those interested in colonial villages. It is warm year-round, and the drier months make for easier travel.
