Cienfuegos, Cuba: travel guide
A French-influenced bay city of neoclassical streets
The "Pearl of the South" — a UNESCO-listed 19th-century French-influenced bay city with a graceful neoclassical centre and the Palacio de Valle.
About Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos is a port city on the south coast of Cuba, set on a large natural bay and known as the Pearl of the South. It was founded by French settlers in the nineteenth century, and the neat grid of streets and neoclassical buildings give it a more ordered feel than many Cuban cities.
The heart of the city is Parque Jose Marti, lined with the cathedral, the Teatro Tomas Terry and other fine buildings. Along the bay, the Palacio de Valle is an exuberant mix of architectural styles, and the Cementerio de la Reina is an atmospheric walk. The Museo Provincial adds local history, and the seafront Malecon is a pleasant place for an evening stroll.
Cienfuegos suits architecture lovers and travellers on the route between Havana and Trinidad. The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable.
