Viñales, Cuba: travel guide

Limestone mogotes, tobacco farms and caves in a green valley

Tobacco-growing valley in Pinar del Río (UNESCO), famed for limestone mogotes, cave systems and traditional cigar farms.

About Viñales

Vinales is a small town set in a valley of red earth and green fields in western Cuba, dotted with rounded limestone hills known as mogotes. The scenery is among the finest in the country and is recognised as a protected cultural landscape.

This is tobacco country, and you can visit a working farm to see how the leaves are dried and rolled. Walking and horse-riding trails lead through the fields, the Mirador del Porri gives a wide view over the valley, and the Mural de la Prehistoria is a huge painted cliff. Caves such as Cueva de San Miguel and Cueva de la Vaca can be explored with a local guide.

Vinales suits walkers, nature lovers and travellers wanting a slower pace. The dry season from November to April is the most comfortable time to visit.
