Finland's fifth-largest city and cycling capital of the world, Oulu (Swedish: Uleåborg) sprawls at the mouth of the Oulujoki River on the Gulf of Bothnia, 600 km north of Helsinki.
About Oulu
Oulu is a northern Finnish city at the mouth of the Oulujoki river on the Gulf of Bothnia, and a place where bicycles are used year-round. A network of cycle paths links parks, islands and the waterfront, and the city is also a technology centre with a young population.
In the centre, visit the Market Square, the Toripolliisi statue and the cathedral. The Hupisaaret islands park is a green retreat, and Nallikari Beach offers sand and a seaside promenade in summer. Tietomaa is a hands-on science centre. The city also serves as a base for the northern coast and trips towards Lapland.
Oulu suits cyclists and families. Summer is best for beaches and cycling, while winter brings snow and a quieter pace.
