Sighnaghi, Georgia: travel guide
A walled hilltop town above the Alazani Valley and its vineyards
Walled hilltop town in the Kakheti wine region overlooking the Alazani Valley, ringed by 18th-century ramparts and surrounded by vineyards and the Bodbe Monastery.
About Sighnaghi
Sighnaghi is a small walled town on a ridge in the Kakheti wine region of eastern Georgia, looking out across the wide Alazani Valley to the Caucasus beyond. Cobbled streets, red-roofed houses and carved balconies give it a postcard look, and the town walls with their many towers can be walked in part.
Things to do in Sighnaghi include strolling the old streets, taking in the valley views, visiting nearby Bodbe Monastery and tasting wines at family cellars in the surrounding villages. Kakheti is the heartland of Georgian winemaking, and the traditional qvevri clay-vessel method is part of the story.
Sighnaghi suits couples and wine lovers wanting a slow stay. Late spring and the autumn harvest are especially attractive.
