Alleppey, India: travel guide

Backwater canals, rice paddies and houseboats in the Kerala waterways

The 'Venice of the East' — a labyrinth of backwater canals, rice-paddy shores, and iconic houseboat cruises through Kerala's serene inland waterways.

About Alleppey

Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, is the main gateway to the Kerala backwaters. A web of canals and lagoons runs between coconut groves and rice fields, and kettuvallam houseboats drift past villages, fishermen and temples.

Most visitors spend a night or two on a houseboat, but you can also hire a canoe to explore the narrow channels or take the public ferry for a cheaper, slower look. In town, the beach, a lighthouse and the old canals are worth a short walk, and local seafood is excellent.

It suits couples, families and anyone who wants a slow pace. The cooler season from November to February is the best time to visit Alleppey.
