Bhuj, India: travel guide

Gateway to the Rann of Kutch and its embroidered crafts

Gateway to the Rann of Kutch — famed for exquisite Kutchi embroidery, mirror-work crafts, and the vast white salt desert that transforms at the Rann Utsav.

About Bhuj

Bhuj is a walled town in Kutch, western Gujarat, and the usual base for exploring the white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch. The district is known for the embroidery, block printing and mirror-work produced in its villages.

In town, the Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal are former royal palaces with intricate rooms and towers, and the Kutch Museum shows the region's textiles and folk art. Hamirsar Lake is a pleasant place to sit at dusk. The great draw, the White Rann near Dhordo, is a day or overnight trip, glowing under moonlight in the cold season.

Bhuj suits craft lovers, photographers and desert travellers. The best time to visit Bhuj is from November to February, the season of the Rann Utsav, when the desert is dry and the weather cool.
