Jaisalmer, India: travel guide
A living sandstone fort rising from the Thar Desert
The 'Golden City' rising from the Thar Desert — a living fort city of honeyed sandstone, camel safaris, and star-lit dunes.
About Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer glows honey-gold at sunrise and sunset, the colour of the sandstone from which its fort and houses are built. Unusually, Jaisalmer Fort is still inhabited, with shops, guesthouses and families living within its walls.
The town is known for its carved havelis, such as Patwon Ki Haveli and Salim Singh Ki Haveli, and for the lake at Gadisar. Out of town, the Sam Sand Dunes are the setting for camel rides and nights under desert stars.
It suits travellers who want a remote, atmospheric corner of Rajasthan and are happy with a long journey to reach it. The cooler winter months, October to March, are the best time to visit Jaisalmer.
