Kalpetta, India: travel guide

Gateway town to Wayanad's caves, peaks and coffee hills

Gateway to Wayanad — Kerala's tribal highland of ancient cave temples, misty peaks, coffee estates, and the Edakkal Cave petroglyphs.

About Kalpetta

Kalpetta is the main town of Wayanad, a highland district in Kerala's Western Ghats, and a practical base for exploring it. The surrounding country is made up of forested ridges, coffee and spice estates, lakes and waterfalls, with the weather cooler than on the coast.

From Kalpetta you can reach Edakkal Caves, where ancient carvings are etched in rock, Banasura Sagar Dam and its hill backdrop, and Pookode Lake. Soochipara Falls and the trek to Chembra Peak suit active travellers, while Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary offers a chance to see elephants and deer.

Wayanad suits nature lovers, families and plantation stays. The best time to visit Kalpetta and Wayanad is from October to May, while the monsoon makes treks and roads harder.
