Khajuraho, India: travel guide

Medieval temples carved with sculpture of extraordinary detail

Medieval temples of extraordinary erotic sculpture — the Chandela dynasty's UNESCO World Heritage masterwork of love, life, and divinity.

About Khajuraho

Khajuraho is a small town in Madhya Pradesh with a large reputation. Its temples, built by the Chandela dynasty about a thousand years ago, are covered in sculpture, from gods and dancers to scenes of everyday and intimate life, carved in fine sandstone.

The Western Group is the most visited and sits in landscaped grounds, with Kandariya Mahadev as the best known. The Eastern Group includes Jain temples, and the Southern Group lies a little further out. A light and sound show tells the story in the evening, and Raneh Falls is a short drive away.

Khajuraho suits architecture and art lovers. October to March offers cooler weather.
