Mahabalipuram, India: travel guide

Pallava rock carvings and the Shore Temple by the sea

Seaside UNESCO World Heritage Site of stunning Pallava rock sculptures, the Shore Temple, and the giant carved panel of Arjuna's Penance.

About Mahabalipuram

Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a seaside town on Tamil Nadu's coast, about an hour or so south of Chennai. In the seventh and eighth centuries the Pallava rulers carved temples, caves and monuments from its granite outcrops, and many of them still stand.

The Shore Temple rises beside the waves, and the Pancha Rathas look like five chariots hewn from single rocks. Arjuna's Penance is a vast open-air relief, and Krishna's Butter Ball balances on a sloping rock nearby. Sculptors' workshops still line the streets, and Mahabalipuram Beach is close at hand.

It suits history lovers and relaxed weekenders from Chennai. The best time to visit Mahabalipuram is from November to February, when the sea breeze is cool and the sun is gentler.
