Nashik, India: travel guide

Godavari pilgrimage ghats and wine country in Maharashtra

Pilgrimage city on the Godavari, hosting the Kumbh Mela every 12 years, and centre of India's fastest-growing wine region.

About Nashik

Nashik is a city on the Godavari River in Maharashtra, with two quite different identities. It is a major Hindu pilgrimage centre, one of the places that hosts the Kumbh Mela, and it is also the heart of one of India's best-known wine regions.

The riverside area of Panchavati and Ramkund and the Kalaram Temple are linked to episodes of the Ramayana. Nearby, Trimbakeshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, and the Pandavleni Caves hold ancient Buddhist rock-cut cells on a hillside. Vineyards such as Sula offer tastings and views over the vines.

Nashik suits pilgrims, wine enthusiasts and weekend visitors from Mumbai or Pune. The best time to visit Nashik is from October to February, with the harvest season in winter being especially pleasant.
