Pondicherry, India: travel guide
French-quarter streets, seafront promenade and Auroville close by
French colonial quarter of cobblestone streets, bougainvillea facades, and Aurobindo Ashram — a peaceful blend of Tamil and French culture on the Coromandel Coast.
About Pondicherry
Pondicherry, also called Puducherry, feels unlike the rest of Tamil Nadu's coast. The French Quarter, known as White Town, has yellow and white villas with bougainvillea, tree-lined streets and cafes, while the Tamil Quarter beyond the canal is more traditional.
Things to do in Pondicherry include cycling the old quarter, visiting the Aurobindo Ashram and the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, and walking along the seafront promenade at sunrise. Auroville, the experimental township a short ride north, offers forest trails and its Matrimandir.
It suits relaxed breaks, couples and anyone interested in French heritage. The cooler months, October to March, are the best time to visit Pondicherry.
