Rishikesh, India: travel guide
Yoga ashrams, white-water rafting and temple bridges above the Ganges
World Yoga Capital on the banks of the Ganges — the gateway to the Char Dham, internationally renowned for yoga, white-water rafting, and ashram culture.
About Rishikesh
Where the Ganges leaves the Himalayan foothills, Rishikesh has become India's best-known yoga town. Ashrams, meditation classes and riverside cafes line both banks, and the suspension bridges of Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula link the two sides.
Beyond practice, you can raft the rapids upstream, walk to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, attend the evening Ganga aarti, or head into Rajaji National Park. The town is also a gateway to the Char Dham pilgrimage routes.
Rishikesh suits yoga students, adventure travellers and pilgrims. The best time to visit Rishikesh is from September to November and February to April, while the monsoon makes the river rough.
