Thrissur, India: travel guide

Kerala's cultural capital, built around a temple and a great elephant pooram

Cultural capital of Kerala, home to the spectacular Thrissur Pooram elephant festival, the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy, and ancient temples.

About Thrissur

Thrissur is a Kerala city laid out in rings around the Vadakkunnathan Temple and its broad green maidan, and it is widely thought of as the state's cultural heart. Temples, churches and mosques sit close together here, and the arts have a long, serious following.

The city is best known for Thrissur Pooram, a spring festival of caparisoned elephants, drumming and fireworks. Outside the festival, you can visit the Vadakkunnathan Temple, the Cheraman Juma Masjid, the zoo and state museum, then head out to Athirappilly and Vazhachal Falls or the Guruvayur temple.

Things to do in Thrissur favour culture over beaches, with good local food and shopping in between. It suits travellers who like to see Kerala beyond the backwaters. Visit between October and March for the most comfortable weather.
